More Hip Than Hippie #281 - Aloha from Jackson Nash

Jackson Nash founded the SuperForest blog and the Zero One permaculture node in Hawaii.

"You are the environment." What does Jackson Nash mean by that? A lot, as the Hipsters discovered. Listen to his inspirational stories from the idyllic Zero One on the island of Kauai. Oh, and did we mention that Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers is our homeboy? We're proud to be Chico Cheeseheads!

Beer and Chocolate:

Beer: Val's tastebuds are in a coma, so Dori shoulders the responsibility of rating Wells & Young's Banana Bread Beer. This subtle brew infused with tasty Fair Trade bananas has a flavor you'll go ape for! Dori: 5 hips

Chocolate: Another treat from Favorite Listener Mandy in Nashville, TN. Olive & Sinclair Chocolate Co. does it again with their Southern Artisan 75% Dark single origin bar. Dori: 5 hips Val: 5 hips.

Hip News and Finds

Finds:

  • Val's Favorite Thing! Flash back to the pre-plastic days of yore. The Stainless Steel Ice Cube Tray delivers BPA-free ice and will keep doing it into the next millenium.
  • How now? Dori is making a moooooove toward real milk by signing up for a cow share.
  • Germ warfare. Feeling under the weather? Val recommends a pre-emptive strike with Oscillococcinum. She also swears by Calms Forte on sleepless nights.

Hip News

  • Frackdown. The EPA proposes an examination of the effects of hydraulic fracturing on the nation's drinking water.
  • Zip it good. Keep those plastic baggies out of the landfill. Ziploc and Recyclebank are teaming up to put collection bins in neighborhood stores.

Teenie Weenie Greenie™

Plant a seed! Spring really is out there somewhere, so make a commitment to grow something edible this year. Whether you have a windowsill or a full blown garden, you can cultivate some fresh food yourself. Look for non-GMO seed providers like Baker Creek Seeds.

Aloha from Jackson Nash

  • He calls the Zero One permaculture node "a garden for children of all ages."
  • Want to make your own 'tree machine'? Consult the Humanure Handbook by Joseph Jenkins.

  • Keelie in New Hampshire (Live Free or Die!) wonders which brands of herbal tea we recommend. Numi is a good brand; check out Zhena's Gypsy Tea too.
  • Blythe in California happily shares some green tourist tips from Crater Lake and Yosemite National Parks. More importantly, she tipped us off to Sierra Nevada's Knightro ESB. Want!
  • Katie in Texas is our hero. She held her baby shower at Austin's Black Star Co-op brewery. Congrats on your little girl! (You named her Dorival, right?)
  • Rebecca in Oregon schools Val about Ducks and Beavers. Here's some video of Bea Johnson and her hot husband!
